When the Lairds of Bal-nagown assumed the titleof Ross as a family name,they dropped the tressureand retained the three royallions as proof of their de-scent from the Royalhouse; motto, Spem suc-cessus alit. The Rosses of Shand-wick bore argent threelions rampant gules. armed sable, the crestbeing a demi-lion rampantgules, and the motto, Xobilis est ira leonis. Our own branch of Bal-blair bore gules three lionsrampant argent, and thecrest was a demi-lion ram-pant gules, armed andlangued sable, and themotto was the same as thatof Shandwick, Nobilis estira leonis. Hon. John Ross, Royalattorney-general, of Tuscu-lum and Philadelphia, borethe same arms, but had fora crest an arm holding awreath of laurel leaves, andthe motto of Ross of Bal-nagown, Spem successusalit.
