This bedconsists of an outer case made of ordinarybed-ticking divided internally into numerousseparate cells, into each of which is placed asuitably constructed bag, which may be eitherwholly or partially filled with air or water;. (Closed.)the latter either hot or cold. (See engr. 2, 3.)It is incapable of bursting, and is very agree-able to lie on. It retains its shape, saves thetime, trouble, and wear and tear ordinarily BEDDINO—BEEP 273 bestowed or producccl by servants in dailytossing about one of down or feathers, iseasily washed and kept clean, allows all theventilation essential to health, and is soportable that it may be easily packed in acarpet-bag. In almost an instant it may beconverted into six, or more, separate life-pre-servers; and what is equally important it willstand any climate. Hitherto the use of air-beds and water-beds has been almost exclu-sively confined to the upper and wealthyclasses, and to hospital practice; but themoderate prices^ at which Aycbourns beds,cushions, &c., are sold, place these luxuries,and in many cases—absolute necessities—within the reach of the mnsses of the people.
