Eskimo Hunter Chats With the Women Folk. In his Kayak an Eskimo hunter paddles alongside an emiak [umiak], or women's boat, to pass the time of day. Both boats are made of skins. White screen on the bow of kayak is to conceal hunter and make his boat appear like a piece of floating ice as it approaches seal or walrus. This picture is from a Kodachrome by the late Lt. Thomas S. La Farge, who lost his life when the Coast Guard cutter Natsek, of which he was commanding officer, sank in the Atlantic.
