. The Annals and magazine of natural history; zoology, botany, and geology. imen is a male, 92 millims. long. It isdescribed in detail in the l Proceedings of the National Mu-seum, Washington, for 1879, as Polycheles sculptus; andl wishhere to call attention to a few points in its structure only. The anterior margin of the carapax, as seen from above, isconcave in outline, so that the lateral angles are much in ad-vance of the rostrum. About a third of the space between themedian line and the lateral angle on each side is occupied bya very deep orbital sinus completelyfilled by a large ophthalmic lobe(fig. 1). Just behind the orbitalsinus there is a smooth and evenlycurved depression in the surface ofthe carapax, exposing a small areaon the posterior part of the ophthal-mic lobe. The ventral region of the carapaxon each side is divided longitudinallyinto three approximately equal partsby two carinas: the outer (markingthe pleuro-tergal suture?) extendsfrom the anterior margin at the baseof the antenna toward the postero-lateral margin; the inner extends J>0& along the branchial region from near Dorsal view of the ante-rior portion of the right sideof the carapax : a, antennalscale; b, proximal segmentof antennula; c, ophthalmiclobe. the base of the first pereiopod to thepostero-lateral angle of the outer of the three longitudinalregions thus marked out is divided transversely by thecervical suture; and the anterior portion (subhepatic region)is divided transversely into an anterior and a posterior lobeby a groove nearly or quite as conspicuous as the cer-vical. In the frontal margin of this anterior lobe and nearits inner side there is a deep sinus corresponding to the orbitalsinus of the dorsal surface, but not quite as wide, and opennearly to the dorsal surface, except where it is crossed by aprotuberance from the ophthalmic lobe (fig. 2). Structure of Polycheles sculptus. 271 Kff. 2. 4s
