Polite plea to citizens of an English town to unite to prevent boys “dirting” in a public area. Stone plaque on Town Hall, built in 1794, in Hythe, Kent, England.

Hythe, Kent, England, United Kingdom: this quaint stone plaque on the east wall of the undercroft beneath Hythe Town Hall makes a polite plea encouraging upstanding 18th century citizens of the historic South Coast town to help prevent boys “dirting” (presumably, defecating) in the former market place. The inscription reads: “All persons are requefted to unite their Endeavours to keep this Place clean and to prevent Boys or others from dirting the fame.” Hythe Town Hall was built in 1794,with the first floor Council Chamber or Guildhall overlooking the High Street and supported by two rows of four Tuscan stone columns. The ground floor, with a carriage entrance at either end, was the town’s open market.
