This is a close-up picture of a tomato grouper (Cephalopholis sonnerati). The word grouper is used to describe many species with a broadly similar body type, and is believed to be derived from an indigenous South American language. This photograph shows a typical grouper head, which is relatively large and comprises about one third of the body length. The remarkable colouring in this instance is made up of many red spots on a cream background, with the area next to the gill cover characteristically darker.
