Wild Lizard Orchid in natural habitat

A picture of the rare but bizarre Lizard Orchid, 'Himantoglossum hircinum'. It is arguably one of the most distinctive of British wild orchids found in calcium-rich and sun-favoured locations. It gets its common name from a 'likeness' to a lizard from the long central lobe and the shorter side-lobes likened to a lizards legs. Although relatively rare it is a robust plant and considered to be on the increase as it can be found in many different habitats and locations but primarily an orchid of the Southern parts of Britain.
