It should be said, however, in justice to Johnson, that he avowedthat he was not so much in fear of the settlers in the valley as of assaultfrom the New Englanders This may be seen by an extract from oneof his letters : You have been misinformed as to the origin of the re-ports which obliged me to fortify my house, and stand on my had it from undoubted authoritj- from Albany, and since confirmedby letters from one of the committee at Philadelphia, that a large bodyof men were coming to make me prisoner. On June 2, 1775, there was held a general meeting of the committeesof safety for several districts of Tryon county, at which was present forthe first time the Mohawk committee, they having heretofore been re-strained from taking part in the proceedings through fear of the John-sons.
