Sawn sycamore trunk. This trunk is from a sycamore tree (Acer pseudoplatanus). Sycamore wood is hard-wearing and used for furniture, parquetry and flooring. It is also the traditional wood for the back of a violin. This picture, taken in early autumn, shows a log that has been exposed in the open for several years. It has been colonised under the bark by the brightly coloured bracket fungus Stereum hirsutum. As a saprophyte, this does not attack living trees.
