Bob Fleming with a German soldier guarding the railway holidng a MG 34 machine gun at the ‘Railway in Wartime’ North Yorks Moors Railway (NYMR) event at Levisham Railway Station. Levisham Station, was decorated with period posters, and French signs during the (NYMR) ‘Wartime Weekend’ to become ‘Le Visham’ in northern France. The gathering, a recreation of a French village occupied by German troops, being part of the ‘Allo Allo’-style light-hearted and fun mood.
A step back in time to 1943, as the Railway in Wartime reaches it's 20th year. Relivimng the amazing spirit and camaraderie of World War ll and enjoying the various re-enactments, entertainment, street parades and vehicle displays along the line. Every October, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway recaptures the spirit of the second world war, with its Wartime Weekend. It is an annual tribute to the men and women who kept Britain's railways running throughout the war. To remember them, they recreate the sights and sounds of those dark days. Every hour, steam trains leave with servicemen and women, factory workers, land army girls, nurses. The weekend begins with the ceremonial flag raising on Friday, and continues until it is lowered again on Sunday afternoon. Hundreds of skilled re-enactors help create the authentic atmosphere that has earned it an international reputation for authenticity.
