The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is a collection of nineteen astronomical instruments built between 1720 and 1734 by the then ruler and founder of Rajasthan, the Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II. The instrument's primary function was to enable astronomers to map the positions of celestial objects and to measure time. There were five such observatories built up to 1735.
