UNIVAC 1 computer delivery. Workers unloading UNIVAC I, an early computer, at a US government research institute. Here, it is being delivered to the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Livermore, California, USA, a new laboratory being built in the early 1950s by the University of California. An air-conditioned building for the machine was the first major construction project at Livermore, and the computer arrived in January 1953. This site, founded the previous year, would by 1980 be known as the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
