Short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) calf and mother. The foetal folds are seen here. Whales and dolphins dive to feed, coming to the surface for air. The short-finned pilot whale, which is found throughout the world's temperate and tropical waters, is actually a large dolphin. When born, a pilot whale weighs around 100 kilograms and feeds on its mother's milk. Later, it feeds on fish, squid and octopus, and can grow to 4 to 6 metres in length and a weight of tons.
