The poor Scotchman had been in prison three weeks, and three weeks in a Haitien jail is no joke, with the thermometer at 120% bad food, and most filthy quarters. The Haitiens are a very polite nation, and their letters are invariably couched in the most courteous terms â in fact, they are adepts at the art of evasion. Under the circumstances, I was constrained to write very firmly, but politely, to his Excellency the President of the Kepublic, demanding the immediate release of Mr Bain, the Scotch gentleman, and that he be com- pensated for his incarceration of three weeks at the rate of 100 dollars (£20) per day for the whole time ; also, that Mr Ahrendts, our vice-consul, who had been in prison five.
