He served the nation welland faithfully until the close of his administra-tion, March 4, 1885, and was a popular candidatebefore his party for a second term. His namewas ably presented before the convention at Chi-cago, and was received with great favor, anddoubtless but for the personal popularity of oneof the opposing candidates, he would have beenselected as the standard-bearer of his party foranother campaign. He retired to private life, car-rying with him the best wishes of the Americanpeople, whom he had served in a manner satisfac-tor>- to them and with credit to himself.
