Burj Qatar, Doha Tower, Doha, Qatar. Architect: Ateliers Jean Nouvel, 2012. Detail of the facade based on a traditional mashrabi
Situated between the new city centre and the north side of Doha Bay the 231-meter tower was designed during a time when mayor cultural development plans for Doha were launched by Sheikh Saud al-Thani. The circular building with structure pushed to the periphery measuring a 45m in diameter is topped by a dome; the design comparative to Nouvel’s “Tours sans fins” (Paris 1989 - unbuilt) and the Agbar Tower (Barcelona, 2000-2005). The façade pattern, inspired by the mashrabiyya and formed by butterfly aluminium elements are set on the façade according to the specific orientation of each part of the building - 25% toward north, 40% toward south, 60% on east and west.
