Albert Einstein (1879-1955), German-Swiss-American physicist. Undoubtedly the most distinctive scientist of the 20th century, his main achievement was the Theory of General Relativity which dismantled the Newtonian theory of gravitation. A key point of his work is the equivalence between energy and mass, which laid the foundations for the development of the atomic bomb. Einstein opposed the quantum theory which some renowned physicists such as Bohr and Heisenberg developed in the early 1920s. Paradoxically he won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for his work on the photoelectric effect, in which he used some quantum concepts.
