When the great Rebellion rose, which the State-rights and nullifying doctrines of Mr. John C. Cal-houn had inaugurated, President Tyler renounced hisallegiance to the United States, and joined the Confed-erates. He was chosen a member of their Congress;and while engaged in active measures to destroy, b^force of arms, the Government over which he hadonce presided, he was taken sick and soon ELEVENTH PRESIDENT. 5$
