But even this improvedinside course will probably never be again usedfor an international race. The open ocean beyondSandy Hook has been chosen as the field for allthe contests for the cup this year, and this choiceis a precedent which will probably govern in allother international races. The inside course ofthe New-York Yacht Club was unfair to strangers,but no more so than the course of the Boyal. THJSTI/E. speed that Americans felt far from certain as towhat would be the outcome of the races for thecup, while the Scotch and English, on the otherhand, were confident of victory. When theThistle came to be officially measured for therace it was found that her load water-line lengthwas nearly a foot and a half more than specifiedin the challenge, when her water-line was an-nounced to be 85 feet. It was declared by somethat this invalidated the challenge, but the special?committee lot the New-York Yacht Club and Mr. Yacht Squadron, around the Isle of Wight, overwhich the America originally won the cup. The race of September 28 was a glorious vic-tory for the Volunteer. The American sloop beatthe Scottish cutter 19 minutes 23 1-4 seconds,and as the finish was with spinnakers set and afair working breeze blowing, this represented agreater distance than had ever before at a finishbeen between the two contestants for this Thistle hardly deserv
