CATTO, ROBERT KILGOURTHOM: Cap-tain, 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders; son of James Catto, wine-merchant; born Aber-deen, 28 February 1873 ; educated AberdeenGrammar School; student in Medicine, the outbreak of war he was in the firm ofMessrs. James Catto Ltd., Aberdeen, where hehad acted as Managing Director for fifteen October 1914 Catto was commissioned inthe Gordons and served with the 2/4th and,later, with the i/4th Battalions in France from 42 IN MEMORIAM. May 1916. He was. only a few months inFrance when he fell,killed by a stray shell,at Beaumont Hamel,5 November 1 9 1 Colonel wrote ofhim: By his deathI have lost an ex-cellent officer who wasmost valuable and effi-cient, and was onewho was remarkablycool and brave underfire on all occasions . He joined the Ter-ritorials in 1911, andwas mobilized 5 August1914, with the 7thBattalion GordonHighlanders. Birsswent with his Battalionto Bedford, where heremained till May 1915, then proceeded toFrance, where he was killed in action at Beau-mont-Hamel, on the Somme Front, 13 November1916.
