. History of the Third Pennsylvania Cavalry, Sixtieth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, in the American Civil War, 1861-1865 [electronic resource] . Itis cut out of light gray New Hampshire granite, in nine pieces, weighing in all twenty-six tons, and stands twenty-nine feet inheight, the base being seven feet broad. In accordance with anarrangement with the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Associa-tion, that body purchased a piece of ground on the Lott farmsixty feet square, with a carriage-road approach from the LowDutch Road, of the width of twenty feet. In selecting the site the Executive Committee had in viewthe importance of so placing the shaft as to render it visible froma distance, and at the same time to mark the place upon whichthe great hand-to-hand sabre fight took place. The shaft canbe distinctly seen from East Cemetery Hill, from which pointthe greater part of the entire battlefield is visible. From thatposition the relative importance of the cavalry fight can best bejudged, and the effect of the resistance of the attack of the Con-federate cavalry can best be appreciated. The shaft bears the following inscriptions:. CO oc UJ o UJ I-<tr UJ Q ui OO Q Z< zo z D Q. DO KEY Back Row Col. .luhn B. Bachelder, Historian of Gettysburg Battle Front Row Asst. Surg. T. T.
