From Hickory to the top of the mountain theroad is via Connelly Springs, which is a summer resort and containsa very good mineral spring; Yaldesi, which is the center of a part ofBurke County where there are a great many vineyards; Morganton, thecounty seat of Burke County; Bridgewater; Marion, the county seat ofMcDowell County; Old Fort, which was formerly the terminus of the. HIGHWAY WORK IN NORTH CAROLINA. 25 Western North Carolina Railroad, at which point travelers took thestage to cross the Blue Ridge going to Asheville, Buncombe Old Fort the highway begins to climb up the Blue Ridge, and someof the most beautiful scenery along the whole ridge is from here toAsheville. The road, as surveyed, will pass Round Knob, at whichplace there is being installed a fountain which will throw a stream ofwater over 100 feet high. The highway climbs the mountain to Swan-nanoa Gap at a maximum grade of 4% per cent. This section of theroad is now being built, and is expected to be open early in the springof 1912. At Swannanoa Gap the highway enters Buncombe County, which isthe banner county of western North Carolina as regards good has a first-class macadam and sand-clay road extending from theGap to the Buncombe County line on the west, the highway pass
