Jogging around the Chester Roodee racecourse
Chester's "Soup-plate" Racecourse. The elegant 65 acre Roodee- the "Sweet rood of Chester" (Gascoigne 1575)- whose rarther odd name derives from the Saxon Rood- a cross and the Norse suffix Eye- meaning an island- 'The Island of the Cross'. The waters of the Dee covered the area during Saxon times, with the exception of a small island upon which stood a stone cross, the stump of this can be seen today in the middle of the racecourse. There has been racing on the Roodee at Chester for over 450 years. An unforgettable experience either in the sophisticated surroundings of the enclosure, or the vantage points of the City Walls. There are twelve flat race days and evening meets. Beginning with the May Festival , ladies evenings 13thJune and 14th July, Roman Day and Family Fun day.
