Here CustersBrigade and Halls Battery were forced back to SeminaryRidge by the overwhelming numbers of Hills Corps, where anew line was formed, Rowleys and Robinsons Divisions andthe Bucktail Brigade, of Pennsylvania, distinguishing them-selves in holding it against repeated attacks. The drive wascontinued across Willoughby Run, where General Buford,with his cavalry, brought on the action of Gettysburg, fightingdismounted for two hours against superior numbers, winning PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY 335. for himself and command meritorious praise from the Com-manding General, for his gallant resistance to the advance ofHills Corps of Lees Army. This cavalry action and thestubborn resistance of the glorious old First Corps, underReynolds, and that of the unfortunate Eleventh Corps, underHoward, gave the opportunity for the Army of the Potomacto concentrate on the lines thesecond and third day, that gaveto the nation Gettysburg. After a visit to the Springs,to enjoy the Katasalyn waters,the story being told of theirdiscovery as medicinal proper-ties by wounded men crawlingto the springs to bathe theirwounds in the waters, westarted back to town over theChambersburg Road, passingthe Seminary where GeneralLee made his headquarters,after the withdrawal of ourtroops to the Cemetery, untilhis army retreated back to Vir-ginia.
