Photograph by David Coleman. "Stumpy" is a well-known Yoshino cherry tree (Prunus x yedoensis) located along the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park, Washington DC. This distinctive tree earned its nickname due to its gnarled and stunted appearance, which has made it a favorite subject for photographers and cherry blossom enthusiasts. The National Park Service has announced that Stumpy will be removed as part of the Tidal Basin seawall reconstruction project, a critical infrastructure improvement initiative. This project aims to address issues such as daily tidal flooding and crumbling walls that threaten the longevity of the Tidal Basin and its famous cherry trees. The Tidal Basin, part of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, is home to thousands of cherry trees that bloom each spring, attracting millions of visitors for the National Cherry Blossom Festival. This annual event commemorates the enduring friendship between the United States and Japan, symbolized by these flowering cherry trees. The festival originated from the 1912 gift of cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to Washington, DC, although Stumpy itself is not from this original planting.
