Grey sky portrait, to Beetham Tower reflecting water lock 92 Rochdale Canal from Castle Street Bridge, Castlefield, Manchester
The 1805 Trans-Pennine Rochdale Canal joins the Castlefield Canal Basin, from the north-east at Castle Street Bridge. The Bridgewater Canal joins the basin from the south. The Rochdale Canal links up with the Calder and Hebble Navigation at the Sowerby Bridge Canal Basin, near Halifax. A nearby information board says the last lock on the Rochdale Canal (seen here), labelled Lock 92, was the first to be built. The chief sponsor was a Yorkshireman, who didn't want his canal to start in Lancashire, hence he reversed the numbering of the locks. The multi-use Beetham Tower, at 168 m (551 feet), is the tallest skyscraper in Manchester, and eleventh in the UK, Completed in 2006, it also one of the thinnest skyscrapers in the world.
