Time—as Constable said itwould—has greatly modified the spotted appearance he gave to his paintings ;those spots have since become lights in harmony with the rest of thecolouring. We must admit, however, that some of the shadows are nowblacker than they were originally, and consequently impart a heaviness to theworks.
