Genetically modified carnivorous plants. At left is a leaf from a genetically modified plant from the Drosera genus of carnivorous plants. At right is an ordinary leaf. The blue color is caused by the presence of the protein beta-glucuronidase (GUS), which is used as a reporter gene to monitor gene expression. The colour is proof of the ability of the plant to produce recombinant proteins. This research, being carried out for PATsas, a French biotechnology company, involves producing human recombinant proteins with medical applications, based on the natural proteins produced by carnivorous plants.
