The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is commonly known as Hong Kong is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. Made up from over 260 islands, the territory is located on the eastern side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in the east, west and south. Hong Kong was a territory of the United Kingdom until 1997 and was handed back to the Chinese government by the British government in that year.
