Wood choppers in Boljevac, Serbia
The forests in Serbia are maintained in a sustainable manner. A way of working that still comes from the communist era. Together with the forester and 'woodmen' of the government, it is determined which trees need to be cut down. The handful of young people who choose to stay in rural Boljevac often work in sustainable forest construction. If you live in this area, this is one of the few jobs that are available. With 12 to 13 hours a day the men make long days. The wood is used, among other things, for the production of charcoal. Larger pieces are used in the furniture industry. In order to get the felled wood down in the mountain and hilly landscape, horses are often used.
