This spe-cies has much the same range as its relative justnamed, though, as mentioned, Ross Goose ismore often taken on the coast. Neither ofthese small geese are taken on the Atlanticcoast. A rare bird all along the coast line of NewEngland, and in fact, on the entire Atlanticcoast, of more frequent occurrence in the West,especially on the Pacific coast in winter. Thisspecies breeds only in the far north, all acrosstne American continent, perhaps more abund-antly on the northwestern ranges. The sexes are identical in markings, whichare as follows: head and neck brownish; awhite patch around the base of upper mandible,with a blackish margin behind it. Above duskygray; below whitish, smirched on the breastwith black of varying extent and depth of color,from which marking they are sometimes calledSpeckle-bellies, a most classical crissum, upper tail coverts and sides ofthe rump are white.
