wooden fishing boats on the beach and locals gathered around to collect fish catch, Tarrafal, Santiago, Cape Verde.

Brightly painted open wooden fishing boats hauled up on the beach and local girls gathered around to collect fish catch from fishermen, Tarrafal, North west Santiago, Cape Verde Islands (Cabo Verde). Artisanal fisheries are still very important in the Cape Verdes. Many of these small boats are simply rowed by oars, some have small outboard motors. Tarrafal, or Villa de Tarrafal, is a small fishing port on the north western tip of Santiago. It has a beautiful sandy beach. Typical species caught include yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), big-eye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and African hind (aka bluespotted seabass)(Cephalopholis taeniops).
