In the latter caseit is set in motion by a solenoid which drops its armature. During the descent the reversed motors must, by synchronism, work at the same rate as during the ascent, assuming that thealternators at Lauterbruinien revolve at the same rate. In orderto dispose of the superfluous electric energy produced during thedescent, resistances have been inserted in the high tension cableat Lauterhrunnen, and in case of danger the motor has only to bereversed in order to ensure cither a stoppage or a reversal of thetrains motion. The current is collected by four trolleys, two for each trolleywire. The first two locomotives were constructed by the Swiss Loco-motive Construction Co., of Winterthur, in conjunction with Itrown,Bovcri & Co., of Baden. The weight of each is 14 tons, length4,376 m., breadth m., height above rail m. A low framerests on two axles, between which it carries the two toothed wheelswith their shafts and gearings. The two motors, of 150 h. p. 760 revolutions per minute, and are placed on the frame. Themotors drive the toothed wheels by means of pinions, mounted onboth ends of their shafts. A tachometer coupled lo the shaft ofone of the motors registers the speed. The hand brakes consist of shoes which arc pressed by meansof screws and levers against a drum fixed to the toothed toothed wheel carries two of these drums, and to each drumtwo shoes arc applied.
