The Grand Junction Canal at Batchworth Mill, Hertfordshire, UK. Work began on the canal, which linked London with the Midlands, in 1793. It was completed in 1801 and became an important industrial route, with towns on the canal thriving. Batchworth Mill was built in 1790 and used for spinning cotton. It used the River Colne to turn its wheel. But upon the construction of the canal this river was also used as one of its water sources. The canal operator consequently agreed that if the water fell below a certain level, marked by a stone, he would pay the mill compensation. Taken from a book published in 1819.
