Good naturecould not, however, deny that as a starterthe English engine was a failure. Itmaintained its first reputation and itsfurther history is lost in oblivion. Baldwins Lancaster. Shortly afterward Mr. Baldwin in1834 built the Lancaster (Fig. 37) forthe Columbia line. That engine wassimilar to the E. L. Miller, and workedsatisfactorily. The following year twomore Baldwin engines were placed onthe line. Several other English locomo-tives were imported and they perform-ed better than the first one, but the. BALDWINS LANCASTER. FIG. 37. and Chester counties. It required timeto overcome this feeling. LEGISLATURE CONSENTS TO THE PURCHASEOF LOCOMOTIVES. In spite of their tender mercies for theinterests of the farmer and of otherhorse owners, the Legislature of Penn-sylvania were eventually compelled toconsent to the use of locomotives on theState Railroad. When this decision wasreached, a locomotive was importedfrom England for use on the Philadel-phia & Columbia line. Great expecta-tions were aroused about the wonderfulperformance this engine would the line was not yet completed at thePhiladelphia end, the locomotive washauled over the turnpike road to Lan-caster, where rail connection was reach-ed. A BALKY LOCOMOTIVE. The starting of the locomotive was anevent which attracted crowds from farand near, and a holiday was declared forthe occasion. Governor Wolf and theleading State
