Thoughthe composition is rough, the whole sceneis full of vigour. A good number of representations ofS. Michael are figured in Keysers Tympana. One of the emblems of S. John the Evan-gelist is a chalice with a dragon issuing out ofit. Many stories are told in explanation ofthis emblem. One of the most familiar is theone given by S.
