The remains of Salcombe Castle at North Sands, Salcombe, South Hams, Devon. The castle was built by Henry VIII to defend Kingsbridge Estuary against French and Spanish pirates. Although undamaged, the castle surrendered to Parliamentary forces during the civil war, but after the war it was ordered to be slighted, or ruined, being considered a possible future royalist threat.
