Kyoto, Japan - 4 November 2005; The Japanese Zen Garden seeks to creates a miniature stylized landscape through carefully composed arrangements of rocks, water features, moss, pruned trees and bushes; it commonly uses raked gravel or sand to represent flowing water. A classical Zen garden is usually relatively small, surrounded by a wall, and is usually designed to be viewed from a single viewpoint, typically the residence of the chief monk of the temple or monastery, Zen gardens were created at temples of Zen Buddhism throughout Kyoto during the Muromachi period. They were intended to imitate the intimate essence of nature, as well as serving to aid meditation on the essence of life and enlightenment.
