CARNATIONS—Novelties HOUSE OF HARRY FENN. Taken "December 1st. 1901. New Harvard Crimson Carnation HARRY FINN. (Ward.) (Certificated.) {Gold Medal, Pan-American Exposition.) This is unquestionably the most prolific commercial crimson carnation in existence. The color is a magnificent scarlet crimson, just the Harvard shade, and is as brilliant as the well-known Gen. Gomez which was introduced by us a few years since. The flower is very large, full and symmetrical, and is poised on an extra long, stiff wir}' stein. It is an early bloomer, coming into full crop the first of November; producing stems from 20 to 2-4 inches long from the start, and blooms continually throughout the season. At the present time, December 20th, our benches of Harry Fenn have been cutting continually for six weeks and the bloom ranks in price upon the market with the well-known Mrs. Lawson and Prosperity. The habit of the plant is very erect and slender, so that it can be planted much closer than the average carnation. It is fully as free a bloomer as the well-known Gen. Maceo, introduced by us a few years ago, and in our opinion will produce more flowers to the square foot of bench space than will Maceo, owing to its more compact, erect habit. By actual record, it has cut with us two and a half times the quantity per square foot of bench surface that we cut from a bench of Gov. Roosevelt grown under the same conditions. The fragrance is rich and lasting, and the flower is a first-class keeper and an excellent shipper. It would seem as if there could be nothing finer in the style of a crimson carnation. In our opinion, this is the forerunner of a race of the most profitable commercial carnations that will be produced in this country. Its compact, strong, slender, wiry habit, which permits its being planted
