SARS virus particle. Illustration showing the external structure of a SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus particle. This virus is a coronavirus, named after the corona (crown) of surface proteins that are used to penetrate a host cell. The virus particle consists of an RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material core surrounded by a nucleocapsid and a lipid envelope. The surface proteins consist of glycoproteins. SARS is a fatal lung disease that results in high fever and flu-like symptoms. It appeared in China in late 2002, and spread through air travel.
