The nasal are several practical hints regarding the uses of this impor-tant part of our bodies which should here be given. The eyes shouldbe used, but never abused. People should not sit up late nights as theyare wont, injuring them by artificial lights, and, by so doing, lose aportion of the light of day. The eye, like the rest of the body, itshould be remembered, needs regular rest. Sudden transitions of lightshould always be avoided. Parents, a* well as others, sometimes in-flict a life-long injury upon the childs eyes by waking it suddenly be-fore a strong artificial light. Too intense light of the sun should also. APPENDAGES OF THE EYE. Inflammation of the Eye. 611 be shunned; and cleanliness, the most sedulous possible, is nowheremore important than in reference to these parts. The diseases of the eye are numerous the more important of whichwill now claim our attention. Ophthalmia—Inflammatioj of the Eye. This is both .acute and chronic. It may affect the conjunctiva sim-ply, or the wlwle eye, but not often. Purulent ophthalmia is the worstform of conjunctival inflammation. It often affects children soon afterbirth, in consequence of neglect of cleanliness of the parts, and stilloftener, probably, because of a vitiated state of constitution, derivedfrom the mother. It is also common among adults. Ophthalmia oftenbecomes contagious, so that persons have lost their eyes merely bywiping on a towel that
