Norway Maple ( Plantianiodes )—A native of Europe. Its large, compact habit, broad, deep green, shining foliage, and its vigorous growth, renders it one of the most desirable species for streets, parks and lawns. Purple=Leaved Sycamore Maple ( Pur- purea )—A strong, rapid grower ; foliage deep green on the upper surface and purplish red underneath. Produces a fine effect with other trees. Scarlet Maple ( Rubrum)—A native variety of medium size, producing deep red blos- soms before the leaves appear. In autumn the leaves change to a brilliant scarlet, rendering the tree very effective. Schwedlerii ( Schwedler's Maple)—A beau- tiful variety, with young shoots and leaves of a bright purplish and crimson color, which changes to purplish green in the older leaves.
