Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, RNA virus) is a member of the paramyxovirus group that is a major cause of respiratory tract infections in all ages, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). In adults the virus only affects the upper respiratory tract, but infants and young children may be more severely affected and develop bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways, or bronchioles, in the lungs) or potentially fatal bronchopneumonia. RSV is more often being recognized as an important cause of respiratory illness in older adults. Magnification: x29,500 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
