Dacre's Cross marking the Battle of Towton fought on Palm Sunday 29th March 1461 between the House of Lancaster and the House of York when 28000 soldiers were killed in one day during the Wars of the Roses when the armies of King Henry VI clashed with King Edward IV and no quarter was given in the bloodiest battle ever to have taken place on English soil.
