Southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina). These seals have come ashore for their annual moult. Elephant seals form large groups on land, often literally lying on top of each other. This is thought to help them keep warm. These females lack the trunk-like proboscis found in males, which gives the species its name. Southern elephant seals spend 10 months of the year diving to forage for food, mainly squid. Apart from moulting they only come ashore to breed. Photographed on South Georgia Island.
