Vietnam: Hang Bac or Silver Street, Old Quarter, Hanoi, 1920. Most street names in Hanoi's Old Quarter begin with 'Hang', meaning 'shop' or 'merchant'. 'Bac' means 'silver'. This street dates back to the 13th century, but it was during the reign of Le Thanh Tong (1469-1497) that silversmiths and goldsmiths set up shop here. In the 18th century, moneychangers and jewelry makers moved in. During French rule, it was called 'Exchange Street'.
