A Large Cabbage White Butterfly given scale by sitting on a hand shortley after hatching and pumping up it's wings ready for it's first flight.


A Large White butterfly recently hatched is resting on the photographer's hand while it pumps up it's wings before attemting it's first flight. The large white is a strong flier and the British population is reinforced in most years by migrations from the continent. The crops most susceptible to P. brassicae damage in Europe are those in the genus Brassica (Cabbage, Mustard and similar) also Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, rape and turnip.
