Derek Rae came second in the World Para Athletics Championships held during the event on Sunday. Derek, 33, of Kirkcaldy crossed the finish line in a time of 2:27:08, carving six minutes off his personal best. He told Paralympics GB he was stunned by his performance. He said: “It’s a huge PB. “I knew I was in good shape coming into this one, at least sub 2:30 shape. “I ran the whole race with confidence but quite conservatively. “I don’t think it has sunk in yet, it’ll probably take a few weeks. “I’m super proud; I’m proud of myself and the team. “It’s a great individual achievement but also good to get the team going on the medal table for the world championships.” Derek became a para athlete following severe injury to his arm and the right side of his body in a road accident nine years ago. He said: “We’ve sacrificed a lot over the last six years; myself, my wife, my team, and now we are starting to reap the rewards. Proud is an understatement.” In last year’s marathon he won the World Para Athletics Marathon Cup for his T45/46 class, finishing in just over two hours and 36 minutes.
