Kelp and eelgrass. Two varieties of seaweed, kelp (centre) and eelgrass, Zostera sp., left stranded on a beach. Seaweeds live in the sea and in tidal habitats. The eelgrass is a flowering plant which has adapted to a marine lifestyle. It derives its green colour from chlorophyll. Kelp is an example of brown algae, which also contains chlorophyll, but the green colour is masked by xanthophyll pigments. Both chlorophyll and xanthophyll can be used in photosynthesis, the process of making food using sunlight. Photographed on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
