Transit of Venus observers, India, 1874. European and Indian observers at Daba Gardens in the city of Vizagapatam (Visakhapatnam), on the east coast of India, planning to observe the transit of Venus on 9 December 1874. Transits by Venus across the Sun are rare, occurring in the modern era in 1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882, and 2004. The next transit will occur in 2012. During the 1874 and 1882 transits, astronomers worldwide made successful attempts to produce a more accurate value for the solar parallax, and hence the distance of the Earth from the Sun. Due to clouds, only part of the transit was observed in Vizagapatam.
